This quantitative hCG test (also frequently called beta hCG), is performed in order to measure the actual amount of hCG present in the blood. It is often helpful in:
hCG levels are usually undetectable. However, early during pregnancy the hCG level in the blood doubles every two to three days. Ectopic pregnancies or failing pregnancies may become suspected if there is longer doubling time. hCG concentrations will drop rapidly following a miscarriage. If it does not drop, the remaining hCG-producing tissue may need to be removed. Individuals with trophoblastic disease may monitor their hCG levels to detect recurrent disease after treatment is complete. Studies suggest that a drop in hCG levels during therapy typically indicates response to cancer treatment, while rising levels may suggest the opposite.
